Dr. Ye Din Tun, Deputy Minister of the Myanmar Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation, stated that Myanmar's avocado production exceeds domestic consumption, and intergovernmental work to formally export avocados to China has entered its final stage.
Under China's newly revised regulations, products exported to China must fully comply with the guidelines of the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC).
Speaking at the Myanmar Avocado and Fruit Exhibition, the Deputy Minister said: "Pest and disease detection work has been completed, and progress has been substantial. Regarding the intergovernmental agreement signing, we have entered the second draft stage, so we will soon obtain export authorization to China."
After the intergovernmental agreement is signed, commercial contracts between exporting enterprises must also be concluded before exports can proceed.
U Khin Tun Tun Win, Chairman of the Myanmar Avocado Growers, Exporters, Producers and Sellers Association, stated: "I don't think we can make it this season; it will likely be next year. Our avocado production is close to 30,000 tons. If there are genuine buyers, export volume could rise to 100,000 tons."
Myanmar's avocado production is approaching 30,000 tons, while domestic consumption is only between 7,000 and 8,000 tons. Prior to the political transition, there had been plans to export to Malaysia, Japan, Singapore, Thailand, and European markets including the United Kingdom, and exports had begun but were suspended due to political changes. The new government is now seeking outlets for growers and producers, focusing on opening up the market in neighboring China, a key cooperative partner.
