Myanmar Aungban Market: Potatoes and Onions Lead Price Declines, While Onions Continue to Soar
According to internal sources from the southern Shan State market in Myanmar, as of September 7, prices of potatoes, onions, and certain other commodities have eased in the fresh produce market of Aungban sub-township in southern Shan State, while onion prices continue their upward trend.
Potatoes and Onions See Slight Price Declines
According to the price list from September 6, potatoes are priced at 2,000 to 2,200 kyat per basket (approximately 1.6 kg), while new potatoes range from 2,000 to 4,200 kyat depending on the variety. Potatoes and onions are among the commodities that have seen slight price declines compared to previous days.
Tomatoes and Ginger
Tomato prices had been on a declining trend, with prices varying by variety at 600 kyat, 1,000 kyat, and 1,200 kyat per basket. Fresh ginger (white ginger) prices are only between 500 and 900 kyat per basket.
Garlic Prices Remain Stable
On the Aungban market, garlic prices currently show no significant fluctuations and remain stable, ranging from 4,000 to 11,500 kyat per basket depending on variety.
New Onions Continue Upward Trend
New onions continue their upward price trend, with No.1 grade at 6,500 kyat per basket, No.2 at 6,300 kyat, No.3 at 5,700 kyat, and No.4 at 4,500 kyat.
Other Fresh Produce Prices
Among other fresh produce, green beans are priced at 3,000 to 3,500 kyat per basket, carrots at 3,500 kyat, pumpkin at 1,400 kyat, winter melon at 700 kyat, long beans at 4,500 kyat, bell peppers at 4,000 to 4,500 kyat, and lemons at 4,000 to 5,000 kyat.
Cabbage is approximately 500 to 1,200 kyat per head, large cauliflower at 800 to 1,400 kyat per flower, large eggplant at 2,000 to 2,200 kyat per basket, and green long eggplant at 3,000 kyat.
Eggplant Shows Rising Price Trend
According to market sources, under current market conditions, eggplant, unlike some other fresh produce, has become one of the commodities beginning to show an upward price trend.
Chili Varieties
Among chili varieties, Shan State dried chili peppers are priced at 22,000 kyat per basket, Galawar chili at 10,000 kyat, green long chili at 7,000 kyat, and fresh red chili at 8,000 kyat. Shan State fine dried chili and "Jade" chili are not yet available on the market.
Market Analysis and Outlook
Market analysts in Aungban note that September is typically the period when prices of most fresh crops decline each year.
During the rainy season, excessive rain exposure and weather conditions cause fruits and vegetables to spoil quickly and develop blemishes, which can affect market conditions.
A fresh produce broker told media: "Every year in September, prices of most fresh crops usually decline. The current return to a declining trend in potato prices is one such case. However, by winter, market conditions for most fresh crops produced in southern Shan State are likely to improve."
Currently, price trends for various commodities on the Aungban market are mixed. Market participants expect that once the rainy season ends and winter begins, the quality and market conditions of fresh crops produced in southern Shan State are likely to recover favorably.
