On October 20, the Malaysian House of Parliament stated that the government is intensifying negotiations with multiple countries in the region to facilitate the export of Malaysian fresh durian to China via road and rail, with an estimated transit time of just 3-4 days.
Malaysia’s Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, stated that this initiative aims to provide a more efficient and economical alternative to expensive air freight and time-consuming sea freight. The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) is working closely with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Transport to coordinate cross-border routes through Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia.
"Land transport is expected to take only 3-4 days, allowing durian to reach the Chinese market quickly. Malaysian durian is very popular among Chinese consumers, but prices are sometimes very high," said Mohamad.
To secure transit rights, formal negotiations were launched on July 20, paving the way for the proposed four-country route. This land transport corridor, once established, would significantly reduce logistics costs and transit times compared to current air and sea freight options, making Malaysian durian more competitive in the Chinese market.
