Fresh Tuna Arrivals at Tokyo Toyosu Market Surge 44.9% Year-on-Year in August
Overall Volume Growth
According to SeafoodNews data, the total number of imported fresh tuna arriving at Tokyo Toyosu Market in August reached 3,261 fish, representing a 44.9% year-on-year increase. While wild bluefin tuna and southern bluefin tuna supplies rose steadily, bigeye tuna quantities declined.
Bluefin Tuna Doubles
Total bluefin tuna arrivals reached 770 fish, more than double the 386 recorded in the same period last year. Against the backdrop of sharply declining domestic wild catches, procurement from North America and Australia provided critical supply supplementation.
Key Source Markets
Canadian bluefin tuna increased to 495 fish, up from 265 the previous year. Boston bluefin tuna rose to 120 fish, compared to 59 last year. Australian tuna surged to 123 fish, up from 28 in the prior year, representing more than a fourfold increase.
Farmed Tuna and Historic First
For farmed tuna, Mexican imports reached 24 fish, up from 20 the previous year, along with 2 fish from Morocco. Notably, the auction sale of Moroccan farmed bluefin tuna marked the first recorded arrival from Morocco since records began in 1998, including the legacy Tsukiji Market era, representing a significant milestone in the diversification of tuna supply sources for the Japanese market.
